Why support SpecialEffect?

SpecialEffect is a UK-based charity that puts fun and inclusion back into the lives of people with physical disabilities by helping them to play video games. By using technology ranging from modified joypads to eye-control, they’re finding a way for people to play to the very best of their abilities. But it’s not just for fun: by levelling the playing field, the organisation is bringing families and friends together and having a profoundly positive impact on therapy, confidence and rehabilitation.

Are there other charity gaming teams like yours?

Is your content suitable for children?

We strive to keep our content as family-friendly as possible: we’re careful with our language when conducting live streams and will add a notice to our Twitch channel when mature content is being broadcast.

We should point out though that it’s possible for a rude word or two to slip out, so we apologise in advance and will try to prevent this from happening. Unfortunately, interaction in chat rooms and on social media is generally outside of our control and therefore probably isn’t suitable for youngsters; but our team members have the authority to warn or ban inappropriate activity. If you have any concerns, please take a look at our code of conduct and get in touch.

Aren’t video games a waste of time?

Video games can be a means of facilitating contact, encouraging creativity and casting away physical limitations for so many people. They can tell breath-taking stories, open our eyes to new possibilities, and encourage us to think differently about ourselves and the world around us. Just think what could be achieved if everyone with a love of gaming came together for a good cause.

Are you any good at video games?

We admit it: we’d be lying if we said we were experts. But our team bonds over a shared love of video games and the desire to achieve something good using their positive power. As long as we’ve managed to raise awareness for SpecialEffect with our efforts, we don’t care if our character dies a few times during a live stream. Or a few hundred. Ahem.

Live marathon streams? Is that safe?!

We look after ourselves during such events and consider them to be a team effort: our members will often stream in shift-patterns and cover for each other if someone needs to take a nap at any point. The organisations that coordinate marathon streams as part of their fundraising efforts provide safety tips and we highly recommend reading them if you’re taking part in one.
